Financial close readiness lab

Track evidence and review, not just completion.

The worked case and decision context

The question

Which unresolved controls could prevent a well-supported close?

Why it matters

A high completion percentage can hide an unresolved critical item. Separate evidence-backed review from preparation progress.

The decision

Resolve critical blockers first, assign overdue items, and obtain the controller’s review before release. The tool does not approve financial statements.

Worked example

The example has 12 tasks with equal weights. Three have reviewed status, an owner, reviewer and evidence:25%verified. One additional task says reviewed but has no evidence, so it receives no credit and remains a blocker if critical.

Method and assumptions

Verified task=reviewed status+named owner+named reviewer+evidence confirmed. Weighted completion=verified weights÷all weights. Critical unresolved tasks always remain blockers regardless of score. Overdue means due day is earlier than the selected day and not verified. Day 0 is period end; example deadlines are editable calendar-day offsets.

What this model does not establish

Original operational checklist and scoring, not a validated benchmark, audit opinion or certification of internal-control effectiveness. PCAOB AS2201 is cited only for the relevance of period-end processes; its US audit scope is not automatically applicable to your entity. Add entity-specific controls outside this starter and verify evidence independently.

Turn the result into an action

  1. Agree the close scope, critical tasks and dependencies.
  2. Assign preparers, reviewers and evidence locations.
  3. Escalate critical unresolved items before the reporting deadline.
  4. Record approval and exceptions outside this self-assessment.

Review checklist

Keep your work

The working paper is an HTML file containing current inputs, results, assumptions, sources and your action notes. Open it offline and print or save as PDF from your browser. JSON restores the numeric scenario; it does not include action notes. Neither file is an Excel workbook.
